The Philosopher Atlas

Mapping 60 Thinkers in an Eight-Dimensional Interpretive Space. Can philosophical differences be visualized without reducing their complexity? The Philosopher Atlas places 60 thinkers within an eight-dimensional matrix examining how they understand technology, human agency, cognition, nature, power, and historical change. The project does not claim to measure philosophy objectively. Instead, it uses visualization as a method of comparison—making patterns visible while inviting viewers to question the categories, scores, and assumptions behind the map.

BEYOND A SINGLE TYPOLOGY

An interactive space, not a verdict

Philosophers are often classified through schools, periods, or a single opposition: optimistic or pessimistic, instrumentalist or determinist, humanist or posthumanist. These categories are useful, but they can also flatten important differences. Two thinkers may share a critique of technology while disagreeing about nature, embodiment, political power, or historical change. To preserve more of this complexity, I developed an eight-dimensional interpretive matrix. Each dimension asks a different question. Together, they create a comparative space in which philosophical positions can overlap in one area and diverge sharply in another.

How to Read the Atlas

Each philosopher receives a score between −10 and +10 on every dimension. The two numbers represent conceptual poles, not positive and negative judgments. A score of +10 is not "better" than −10, and a score near zero does not imply indecision. It may indicate a mixed position, a tension within the thinker's work, or limited relevance to that particular dimension. The scores are based on selected texts, concepts, and interpretations. They should be read as starting points for comparison rather than definitive statements about an entire philosophical system.

WHERE THE EIGHT DIMENSIONS COME FROM

A framework for asking more precise comparative questions

The framework began with Andrew Feenberg's influential typology of technology, which asks two foundational questions: 1. Is technology neutral or value-laden? 2. Is technology controlled by human beings or increasingly autonomous? I expanded these two questions through several traditions in the philosophy of technology. Don Ihde's postphenomenology informed the relationship between humans and technological objects. The Kyoto School contributed an embodied account of cognition and technical action. Critical Theory and Donna Haraway shaped the political dimension. Masahiro Mori's philosophy of robotics introduced a relational view of technology and nature. Carl Mitcham's distinction between engineering and humanities perspectives informed the disciplinary axis. Finally, German Idealism and Science and Technology Studies provided contrasting accounts of historical development. The result is not a final taxonomy, but a framework for asking more precise comparative questions.

Kate Crawford × Ruha BenjaminThe closest positions in the dataset

Crawford and Benjamin occupy the closest positions in the dataset. Both reject the idea that technology is neutral and examine how technological systems reproduce power. Their proximity, however, does not erase their differences. Crawford emphasizes the material infrastructure, labor, environmental cost, and political economy of AI. Benjamin focuses more directly on race, classification, and structural inequality.

Numerically Close, Philosophically Distant

Sigmund Freud × Hannah ArendtUnexpectedly close despite different problems

Freud and Arendt appear unexpectedly close in the eight-dimensional space despite addressing different philosophical problems. Their proximity demonstrates both the value and the limitation of the model: numerical patterns can reveal structural similarities, but they cannot represent differences in historical context, terminology, or philosophical purpose.

A Wide Philosophical Distance

Francis Bacon × Donna HarawayFrom mastery to relational agency

Bacon represents a modern vision of knowledge as a means of understanding and transforming nature. Haraway questions fixed boundaries among humans, machines, animals, and environments. Their distance reflects a larger shift from technological mastery toward relational and posthuman accounts of agency.

These ten thinkers were selected not as a definitive canon, but for the contrasts and connections they create across the matrix. Each pairing approaches a shared question from different philosophical positions. Some reveal direct tensions; others show how the same technology can be examined at different levels.

TWO CROSS-CULTURAL DIALOGUES ON TECHNOLOGY

What becomes visible when traditions meet

What becomes visible when thinkers from different philosophical traditions are placed in conversation? These pairings do not suggest that the philosophers reached identical conclusions or directly influenced one another. Instead, comparison becomes a method for examining how different traditions approach shared questions about technology, nature, power, and human life.

Mozi × Francis Bacon

Technology as a Tool for Human Improvement

Guiding Question — Should technology be judged by the social good it produces, or by humanity's growing power over nature?

Both Mozi and Francis Bacon valued knowledge for its practical consequences. Neither treated knowledge as purely contemplative: ideas mattered because they could change material and social conditions. For Mozi, technical knowledge should serve ethical and collective goals. Its value depended on whether it benefited ordinary people, reduced waste, strengthened society, and prevented harm. Bacon similarly connected knowledge with human improvement, but placed greater emphasis on empirical investigation and humanity's ability to understand and transform nature.

The comparison reveals two forms of technological usefulness. Mozi asks whether technology contributes to collective well-being; Bacon asks how knowledge can increase humanity's power to reshape the world.

Zhuangzi × Martin Heidegger

When Technology Changes How We See the World

Guiding Question — Does technology merely give us new tools, or does it transform the way the world appears to us?

Zhuangzi and Martin Heidegger both move beyond the question of whether a particular machine is useful or harmful. Their deeper concern is how technological thinking changes the relationship between human beings and the world. In the Zhuangzi, the idea of the "machine heart" suggests that habitual reliance on mechanical efficiency can produce a calculating state of mind. Heidegger's concept of enframing similarly describes how modern technology encourages people to view nature—and eventually themselves—as resources waiting to be organized and used.

For both thinkers, the deepest danger of technology lies not only in what machines do, but in the habits of perception they create. Technology may reshape the very position from which human beings understand nature, others, and themselves.

An interpretive experiment, not an objective classification

The Philosopher Atlas translates selected arguments into numerical positions for comparison. These dimensions may overlap, and similar scores can conceal important differences in concepts, contexts, and intellectual aims. The map is therefore an interpretive experiment, not an objective classification. Its purpose is to make philosophical relationships—and the assumptions behind the framework—visible and open to debate.
